She comes in from a long, hard day, falls onto the couch, and kicks her booted feet up onto the table when she sees the red roses. She stares at the flowers for a long moment, then snatches the card. There's only a name on them, her name.
She frowns and is still staring at the roses when Mary Margaret enters. "Who are these from?" Emma asks, and her best friend, her lover, her mother -- God, the woman's become so many things to her in the short time they've known each other and trying to figure out exactly what she is now, and what their relationship should be, is the conundrum Emma's been puzzling over all week.
Mary Margaret looks back at her for a long moment before slowly nearing. "Who would you want them to be from?"
Emma's eyebrows raise. She starts to answer, then shuts her mouth. It isn't right for a mother and daughter to share as much as they have. Nothing about what they've had is right, and yet, it's all she wants.
Mary Margaret stops just short of the couch and answers in a soft whisper, "Me."
She looks like she's about to break into tears, but Emma's heart is leaping. She reaches up to her, and Mary Margaret's fingers slide through her own as though they were made to be together. "I don't have to call you Mom?" Emma breathes shakily.
"Not tonight," is her equally shaky answer.
Emma pulls her down to her lips.
