"I still don't see why you want this, mi amor," Puss comments as he withdraws a small, glass vial from the pouch he always keeps on his belt, "but here you go. Happy Valentine's Day."

Donkey freezes and then begins to tremble with excitement. His trembles quickly spread from the front of his nose all the way back through his tail and hind hooves. "Is that," he gasps eagerly, "what I think it is?!"

"It is. Ze one and only," Puss confirms, his Spanish accent growing thicker.

Donkey practically dances in place. "Give it to me! Give it to me! Give it to me!"

"As you wish," Puss replies with a sigh. He uncaps the bottle and holds it up. Donkey grabs the bottle between his big, white teeth and quickly drinks its contents. The effects start almost immediately. "Now let the ladies turn up their noses at me!"

Puss is taken aback by his comment, his furry head recoiling and deadly claws unsheathing by pure instinct. "Very well," he says after fighting to contain his baser instincts for a long moment. He turns and starts to walk away.

"Puss? Puss, where are you going?!"

Puss doesn't look back but keeps walking, his teary, green eyes focused on the path ahead of him. "You want the women," he says sadly. He knows he shouldn't be surprised. After all, he's expected it all this time, and if he really needed any proof to where Donkey's heart truly lay, shouldn't the babies he had with Dragon be more than enough evidence? "I'll leave you to them," he mutters.

"You better not!" Donkey exclaims, surprising him and stilling his boots. "The only reason I want them to look at me is so that they'll know why I have you!"

Puss slowly turns to look back over his agile, furry shoulder at Donkey. "What do you mean?" he asks, his whiskers bristling with uncertainty.

"What I said! Everybody always looks at us, and they don't believe we're together! None of the girls in town believe I can have you!"

"But you do have me," Puss replies softly, his confusion growing. "You have me every night." His long, orange lashes through the air like a saber.

Donkey grins. "Don't I know it, baby!" he says proudly. "But they don't get it. I have to listen to them talking every day. None of them believe you could ever want me, not the way I was, but like -- " He trots proudly in his new form. "Oh, yeah, baby! I'm a stallion! Everybody wants me like this!"

"Not I," Puss murmurs, finally turning back around to face his lover.

Donkey stops and cocks his elegant, white head to one side. His ears, now much smaller than they normally are, perk forward. "What do you mean?" he asks.

"Exactly what I said," Puss returns, running his fingers over the brim of his black, feathered cap and watching Puss soulfully from its shadow. "I don't want you like this. I don't like you like this. I want you to be yourself."

"But myself . . . is . . . well . . . ugly!"

"No, it's not! Your true form is beautiful, Donkey, and if they can't see that, it's their fault and their loss! I don't want you thinking you have to be something you're not." Puss shakes his head forlornly as he continues, "That's not right. That's not you. You're beautiful just the way you are."

"You . . . " Donkey stares down at him in disbelief. "You really believe that?" he asks after another long moment, this one caused by own indecisiveness. Puss has never outright lied to him. He used to stretch the truth a little when they first met, but he never lies to him at all now. Yet . . . His true form is a jackass. How can that be beautiful?

"I do," Puss says, walking closer. He fixes him with his eyes. His own, green eyes seem to grow ever bigger and more sparkly as he purrs deeply. "You are absolutely beautiful to me, Donkey, just the way you are. I don't want that to change. I didn't want it to change, but all you ever talk about any more is when you got to be the stallion."

"Yeah," Donkey admits, "because that was the one time in my life when I actually felt like I deserved you."

"You deserve me," Puss tells him, edging closer and still gazing up at him with those adorable eyes, "because of who you are. I love you because of who you are, not what you are or how you look! That doesn't matter! What matters is the real you, Donkey, and your heart is the most beautiful I have ever seen, mi amor!"

Donkey sniffs, a long tear trailing down his cheek. "You . . . You really mean that?" he asks, his voice quavering.

"With all my heart," Puss vows.

"Then . . . " Donkey's mind is whirling with the truths he once, up until just a couple of minutes ago, believed to be impossible. He's always thought of himself as ugly, no matter how much he bragged about himself. His brags were always only words, and often made up even then. But he knows Puss is telling him the truth. He can see it in his love's big, beautiful eyes and hear it in his purr and voice. "Then," Donkey finally concludes with a grin, "it's a good thing this spell is only temporary."

"Si, si," Puss exclaims, his purr growing deeper, "it is!" Donkey leans down as Puss closes the distance between them. Puss eagerly kisses Donkey's muzzle; his swift, heated kisses make his lover tremble again. He grins, sheathing his claws. "Happy Valentine's Day, mi armor! I love you!" He kisses him again and again until Donkey's breath grows ragged.

Puss' eyes gleam mischievously. "Now let's see if I can still make you hee haw, darling, despite this ridiculous form!" He pounces, and Donkey's brays are soon heard throughout their kingdom as he and Puss continue on their very own happily ever after.
